RUN REPORT – RUN 28 (HST 7) – 5 NOV 19

Aim

  • Profile 6, no chute, to measure drag in the range 200-500 mph.

Run Details

  • Track 21, Km 0.5
  • 30C, 925 mb, sunny. Wind SSW, 8G13 mph.
  • Fuel full.
  • 9 miles run.

Run 28 – HST 7

  • 0910 local. Engine start 51 sec with a light head wind.  13:00 run time inc. 5 min cooldown.  AMAD peak temp 107C.
  • Right brake temp indicating full scale before run, settled down during accel, then full scale again during the decel.
  • Car generally directionally stable throughout the run.
  • Centre screen freeze at 390 mph during accel. Run continued on left screen readout, cross-checked with backup GPS/clock.  Screen came live again during decel.
  • Throttle back at ~475/480 mph, peak speed 491 mph.
  • Brakes on at 200 mph/30 Bar, Car slow-speed at Km 11.5, just short of prediction. Max brake temp (left hand side only) 210C.
  • Car driven to end of track, turned under its own power to stop into wind.
  • At shut down, Mach No still reading M = 0.11.
  • Comms at Km 16 are noticeably less good than further north.
  • Second run cancelled. Minor bodywork damage to the rear left delta again.

Summary

Successful profile 6 (no chute).  The Car felt more stable laterally, possibly due to the lighter winds.  The centre screen failure increases the cockpit workload significantly – while it is manageable (that’s what the backup sources are for….) it should be fixed if possible.

Procedural Points

  • Conditions (wind, temp) may be more favourable with an earlier start.

Technical Points

  • Centre screen failure.
  • Right brake temp intermittent.
  • Leading corners of rear deltas showing impact damage from front wheel debris.
